Bubba (Buddy)

I just talked with the lady from Humane Society here. They have a
minpin, which is supposedly the one that was given up after the owner
contacted us and gave us only 9 hours to do anything. Anyway, he has
been through behavior testing and is food-bowl aggressive, but is very
sweet otherwise. He has no problem with being handled. He is B&T, 14
pounds and a little oversized, but is purebred. It is recommended that
he be placed in a no-dog, no small children home. She is going to check
out IMPS, since she has not dealt with them before. Apparently she
deals with another minpin recue group, which confused me since there is
no organized group in Indiana that I know of. But they refused to take
him because of the food bowl agression. She is supposed to get back
with me, and if everything checks out, then I am supposed to pick up the
dog tomorrow. I can foster, but we'll need a permanent home.

<<Yes, there is a breeder friend of mine who does a lot of rescue in
Indiana and she did turn this dog down as he is quite aggressive. This could be
one of the tough calls, it is hard enough to place a dog that is easy to live
with but I for one will not deal with aggressive dogs as the liability
issue is far to great. Not only do you take the chance of one of your dogs being
injured but a very real and very expensive possibility of being sued if the
dog bites and injures a person.

I didn't get your post until after I'd already gotten him. He's
really very affectionate and well-trained with humans. He's better
trained than my dog (which may not be saying much since Lexus pees
anytime and anywhere he wants to), but for now I'm pretty much keeping
him away from my dog. I definitely always feed them in separate rooms
just to be safe. The only time I let them out together is late at night
when they're both pretty calm, but then he's only been here one day. I
don't know, as I don't have much experience doing this, but I think he
would be excellent in a home with no other dogs, and pretty good if
there were larger dogs in the home. He thinks he can intimidate Lexus
because he's bigger (he's also right).
When I had him out last night by himself he curled up next to me
on the couch and fell asleep. He's very affectionate, but looks very
undernourished. I don't know if that's part of the aggression or not.
He follows me around the house everywhere I go, like he's afraid to let
me out of his sight. I think it would be a good permanent placement if
he went somewhere where he was the only dog and could get all the
attention.
I guess this is the 3rd time his owner has let him get out of
the house. He's already microchipped and heartworm negative. I really
think he needs to be neutered soon. His name could be Horny Boy the
second.
Is your friend with a rescue organization? I didn't know anyone
else in Indiana was doing rescue for minpins besides Pam and myself.
Maybe we could coordinate stuff with her.

I met Kara and picked up Buddy.....geez is he a big one but boney. My fun ha
ha has begun as he is dog aggressive. Stopped at the pet shop people petted
him he has allowed me to handle him, my husband absolutedly no problem.
Brought him in and put in the crate as he immediately growled and was
aggressive immediately with my minpin and other male....not with my female
mutt. Currently no one is growling they are eyeballing one another esp.
Doucie and Buddy but Buddy is in crate. We are slowly trying to introduce
them. If things don't get better will need an immediate home. I see NO
PEOPLE AGGRESSION. This pet shop I sometimes frequent is pretty sharp on
training and knowledgeable about dogs and they could not see any signs of
aggression. Although we all agree he is way tooo large for the breed. His
coat is not in good condition....very flakey. Kara had bathed him and he is
as she said very loveable. At this time no way would I send him to a home
with another dog. He is not neutered and will call my vet. He is not as
hyper as Doucie. This is a sweet dog with people but a not with other male
dogs. I can use all the suggestions the list can give......Pam N Friends plus

Whew all dogs out together now in the same room.....it has taken time and
patience but we are here and not that I am not really watchful. Jake and
Buddy had a confrontation earlier...I grabbed Buddy and got bit not anything
worth much.....that has been only human thing and that is my fault for getting
in the middle....but Jake is very strong and it scared me something would
happen. He went to the store with my husband and is now in his lap
snoozing....so maybe once neutered the male thing will stop as he and jake
continue from time to time to have to work this out.

Jake pees, then Doucie pees where Jake peed then Buddy pees where Jake and
Doucie peed, then Buddy pees and then Jake pees where Buddy peed then Doucie
pees where Jake and Buddy peed......and the saga goes on.
Buddy diagnosed as food bowl aggressive just shared food with Doucie but did
have a grumbler when hubby gave out pieces of boiled chicken....we are
surviving and the first day everyone is alive and no one is bloodied......this
is a nice dog so far. Keep your fingers crossed that he continues to
discredit his reputation.....Happy New Year as I brace for a snow
storm.....Pam n Friends

Bubba goes in this afternoon for neutering...his prayers for more snow just
didn't work this time. Wish us well and hopefully he will be back home in the
morning a little sore and ready to play very soon......Pam n Friends

Bubba is home and happy to be here. Had his neutering done and hubby picked
him up this AM. Said he had been in his lap much of the day. When I got home
from work he was a jumpin jack so I would say he is ok. My husband is really
getting attached to this guy I might add.....He was so well behaved at the
vets and around other people...he just doesn't like bigger male dogs. I am
hoping that with the jewels gone he might be a little less challenging with
other bigger male dogs.....well it is a done deal and the guy is doing great.
Had him updated on shots thaat the shelter had not done...rabies I can't
figure that one.....Pam n Friends

Ron is going to North Carolina Feb 21st it would be possible to transport
Bubba if we have a home in that area. No small children or large male dogs.
In a way hope there isn't as I have gotten attached to this fella. He loves
to sit on the upper deck that is fenced in to chase squirrels off the railing
as they come to raid my bird feeders. However this little clown gave me a
heart attack he climbed on the picnic table to the railing and was walking on
the rail that is 20feet from the ground. About the time I think I have minpin
proofed a place they find some way....go figure....Pam n Friends

I met the Turners in Indianapolis today and turned over Bubba. I will tell
you my heart is breaking. I know these are great people and he will be
terrrific with an 18yo. They have taken in other rescues so I feel they will
be prepared and use the patience needed to allow him to adjust to new
surroundings. I guess you feel like you trick them....he thought oh boy oh
boy a car ride and he did get to go to a big Italian Birthday party with
treats and everything before we met so he had a good time. I hope to see them
on the list and I will send the $35.00 they reimbursed me for his neutering to
Imps as a farewell gift to my friend, Buddy.....Rescue the bitter sweet
work...but say prayers for Bubba that he is home at last.....Pam N Friends

Pam - knowing that their Manchester rescue died of old age at 14 (they
didn't get her until she was 8) should help ease some of the emptiness.
These people really, really wanted a min pin, so I would say that he is in
his forever home. Good Job!!!
