Buster (Jayme's)
Fri, 19 Feb 1999 12:49:56 -0800 (PST) - from Jayme
Hi folks! quick (HA!) little update:
Sensing my great sadness after hearing more disappointing puppy news, an
angel answered my prayers and returned the smile to my face :)
Saturday morning, I'll be driving to Seattle to pick up a little Texan. A
little *British* Texan to be more specific. Thank you Wendy, thank you,
thank you! I wonder if he'll say, "Pardon me, but bark-bark ya'll" His name isn't written in stone yet but I've been thinking "Buster" for
months now. I'd like to stick with the cartoon character theme started by
Rocko but it's also got to be a "butch" sounding name for a little MinPin
boy. So, unless I come up with something in the next few hours, Buster it
is even though I'd like a less common name :/
The bittersweet moment is upon me. I'm heading out to the garage to get
the bag of Rocko's things. All of his little toys, sweaters, chewies, etc.
were bagged up and put into the garage on the day he died. I guess it's
time to bring some of those things out of retirement :) I've still got his
first toy (Duckman) wearing his first collar, sitting on my nightstand
next to his ashes. Nobody gets to play with that except me.
Stay tuned to hear Buster's Escapades :)
Oh yeah! Rocko's breeder has offered to give me a 15 month old boy! I'd
take him in a heartbeat but we're all full up now...finally.

P.S. NEVER send anything overnight using UPS. Right Wendy? :)

It's 5AM on Saturday THanks for all the well wishes folks :) Jeanese is meeting me at the
airport then we're going to her place to let my dogs stretch their legs a
bit. Like she said, it's not often you get to meet another list member
face to face. Gotta run... Jayme with the canine crew and the feline foursome.

Ever heard of perpetual motion? That's the best description that I can
come up with right now :) He slept al the way home (a little over 5hrs) so
his battery has been recharged. After only 3-4 hours of sleep, I wish mine
was. I'll write more tomorrow when the fog in my head clears otherwise who
knows what I might say next LOL!

First of all, thanks Beth for the list of names. I really considered
Spunky because of the Rocko connection but it sounds too much like a
Yorkie or something Buster made himself right at home as if he'd always been here. I got some
great video of Sabrina and him gently sparring. She so good with him
although she doesn't always like to share her stuff...Sabrina thinks
*everything* is her stuff. Amber tolerates him and participates in barking
duets with him if she's got something he wants.
Sneakers (3rd kitty) thinks he's pretty okay. Mittsy and Nikki think
avoidance is the best policy. Sylvia (#4) either boxed his little head or
just startled him (they were out of sight).
We went to bed at 10:30 last night. I started to set the alarm for 2 but
hoped he'd wake me instead so I didn't. He did wake me at 1:30 then after
a quick trip outside and just a bit of whining, he slept 'til 7 He's beginning to figure out that *he* is the "Buster" that I keep talking
about and so far Jayme & family

Sorry folks but I'm probably going to be pretty chatty for a while. Bear
with me :) Turning the keyboard over to the little guy:
Buster- We had quite an adventure yesterday. I got to meet 4 new people. I
was poking my head out from mom's jacket when somebody names Sharon tried
to touch me Quick notes: I slept for almost 8hrs last night, mom liked that a LOT.
She got *really* excited yesterday because I walked towards the back door
when I had to go potty. If she keeps watching me this closely, I think I
can remain accident free, not including Jeanese's house Turning the keyboard over to the boss:
Jayme- well, that's all for now. I'd like to get out of this chair because
my butt is numb but I don't want to wake the boy. I guess I'll go play
solitaire...

Well, Buster got his first (since I've had him) nail trim last night.
Thanks to Wendy for warning me that he's a *screamer*. I waited 'til he
was quite sleepy then made my move. I gently cradled the little darlin'
and spoke softly as I reached for the first toe. I grabbed the first
little piggy and Buster let out a blood curdling wail. Oooooh, what my
neighbors must think. I grabbed his muzzle and reminded him that there
were to be no more screaming hissy fits. *Clip*. I grabbed the second
little piggy, scream, wail, wiggle...muzzle grab, yadda, yadda, yadda.
*Clip*. Repeat for third little piggy. Apparently, the third time was the
charm because he was quiet and still for the remaining nails...even when I
quicked him :( (stupid black nails). We'll see what happens next week...

There are puppy classes given here (vet hospital) on occasion. I've been
through three classes with the instructor. I can't call her a trainer
since *I* do all the training LOL! Anyway, I popped in to tell her that I
had gotten my new pup and mentioned that he's a bit scared of everything.
Since tha class was just starting, it was "puppy play" time and she
suggested that I bring him in for a few minutes.

The third (Bustercane) is actually not bad :) He must have been tired to be so still.
The forth (Bustercoat) is Buster modeling his first coat. It's actually
smaller that I meant to make it...oh well. He stood quite still here
because he wasn't quite sure what had a hold of him. He wears it proudly now.

The first position that I really noticed with Buster's ears was: right ear
prety much up but folded at the tip sheltie style and left ear folded at
the base and just slightly off to the side. Next they both moved straight
out to the sides...helicopter style :)
Now his right ear is trying to stand (and sometimes does) but can often be
seen folded across the top of his head so both ears are folded...left. The
next few weeks (teething) should be interesting :)

Buster and I poked our heads into puppy class again last night. For those
of you who don't remember the last time, he barked growled and snapped at
every puppy that approached him last time. He was even terrified of a cute
little Pug baby (wierdo) :)
Thanks for reading this far...I TOLD you it was loooong <VBG>

Mom says I gotta tell you.
A couple nights ago we were leaving from work when I noticed something
very suspicious on the sidewalk. I bark, bark, *barked* and growled at it
while veeeeery cautiously approaching. I knew that at any moment it could
charge us and it's my duty to protect mom's ankles. I gradually got brave
enough to sniff it.

Wow, I was actually able to coach my mom and get her to successfully send
me this photo..amazing for a couple of folks who speak little computer!
This is Buster's first major dog outing. I was impressed with his "stay"
with so many strange dogs and people around. You can see Amber's new
one-eye look. She's still a cutie, looks like she's winking ;)
Finally, Sabrina who seems to be wet and/or dirty at most photo ops.
Okay, okay. I'm done sending photos...for a while :)

Hi Mag, I'm writing from my alter ego "CritterMom". It's still me, Jayme :)
I tried to get all the photos on one neat little page but failed because I
can't get "BusterTable" the same size as the rest :/ Maybe by the time I
send more, I'll have it down ;) Thanks again for all you do, here are the
pix:
BusterCat shows him in one of the places he runs when Sabrina is chasing
him. He may as well use it, the darned cats sure don't.
BusterKong shows him expertly removing a biscuit from a kong. He puts his
lower jaw inside, breaks pieces off then rolls the kong around 'til they
fall out.
BusterBDay is a picture of Buster waiting for us to hurry up and finish
singing so he can have some "cake" 11/22/99.
BusterTable is the best agility photo I have so far. It's hard to get a good
photo with a point-and-shoot camera and an amateur photographer! Hopefully
he'll be this attentive when classes resume Jan 18.
Next time I'll have to show some of the rest of the Zoo, you'd think Buster
is an only child!

Here's Buster on the first jump of his first run at his first agility

Here's the results of our agility trial this weekend. Four runs, four
qualifying scores (100, 100, 93, 100) and four 1st place ribbons...plus
more toys for him to kill! It was an amazing weekend to say the least.
It was a little intimidating to start the runs because everyone would
say "Oh watch this Min Pin, he's awesome!" and other wonderful things. A
simply wonderful end to a miserable week :)

Here are a couple photos of Miss Sarah. The first is of her sweet face and the second is of
her chillin' in the living room. The light's kind of bad on that one but she won't look into the
camera longer than a second and she kept rolling on her back when I tried to pose her better.
Once she's (more) beautiful maybe she won't be so camera shy :)

Hey Mag!
Buster has injured his eyes so many times that I've started to joke with the vets that I'm going to do a double enucleation (remove both eyes) or get him some Doggles. Well, you can see what I did :)
He doesn't LOVE 'em but as long as there's treats involved, he's okay with most situations. He was a BIG hit when he went in for his latest corneal ulcer recheck!

Oh Lord help me. After 15 years of working at this vet hospital and seeing hundreds of cute and homeless dogs and puppies come through to be spayed and neutered, One came in that smashed my willpower to dust On Saturday I will be bringing this 'little' love home. Say hello to Belle (as in Tinkerbelle). She's about 12wks old, almost 20# and at best guess may have some mastiff or bullmastiff and maybe some hound in her.
I haven't had a puppy in 9 years! I'm excited! This cutie pie is going to be a handful though. She is stubborn and *mouthy*, climbs baby gates, hates kennels.... That's okay. I am just the woman for the job :)

Puppy class
Because he was so nervous I held him on my lap and we watched the other
pups run & play. I gave the woman next to me a couple pieces of kibble to
feed him so he thought that she was pretty okay. He did however, growl,
bark and snap(!) at all of the pups who came up to say hi, even a very non
threatening little pug. I gave him little pieces of kibble each time he
didn't. Poor little scared guy :( Hopefully by the time he's in class,
he'll have a little more attitude...we're getting there, inch by inch.
Buster- SCARED?! I wasn't scared, I just didn't want 'em lookin' at me or
touchin' me. I looked at 'em real mean and told 'em to git and they
gitted...or is it got? Hmph, mom says I need social skills but kings don't
have to socialize with common dogs...do they?

I hope it's not a problem that I'm sending them all together.
The first (Buster1) is the first photo taken after I removed him from the
crate at the airport. We joked that he must be part Shar Pei. In later
photos, you can see that he grew into his skin nicely :)
The second photo (Busterbutt) was my attempt at photographing a moving
target. He was a red blur for the first couple of days. Anyway, this is
not the shot I was aiming for but it's pretty funny.

Oh, those wacky ears
Buster- (11" tall, 10"long, 6#) Last weekend I got to chase what mom
calls vermin. We went to a BIG park that had LOTS of mouse and ground
squirrel holes. Mom says, "Where's that vermin?", points to a hole and I
snuffle and snort for the scent and if it's a good one, I start to dig,
dig, dig. That was fun. MOm says that if I didn't bark like a maniac at
every dog I meet, I might make more friends. Hmph, we'll see.

Puppy class try-outs part II (long)
Last night we got there early. The instructor was out sick so it was just
her two student helpers and one of them brought their friendly year old
lab mix (Wesley). Buster did not warm up to that fellow as easily as he
does some other dogs. He actually tucked butt, screamed and ran the first
time the dog approached him
Here's the funny part, one of the students suggested that I get him
neutered to help with his aggression (!) problem. LOL! I told her that if
aggression were the problem I might just do that but since he's terrified
rather than aggressive, there was no real reason to do it before 6 months.
I guess all she could see was the growling/snapping not the tucked butt,
folded ears, fight or flight response that is rather obvious. Good thing
she's the helper not the teacher!
We wanted to see what would happen if I left the room (three strange
people and one dog now). The poor little guy looked scared to death.
Finally he went to the gal still sitting on the floor with her dog and
climbed into her lap between her and the dog! She sent her dog away, held
Buster for a minute then put him out of her lap. He started his scared
puppy pacing and I couldn't stand it any longer (about 1min had passed) so
I went back in. He didn't seem to recognize me even when I called his name
the first time. After a little more coaxing, he ran over and realized
I wasn't just another scary stranger. Poor kid.
Here's the good part: All of the puppies arrived. He watched from my lap
with interest and *very* few barks. He quietly sniffed noses with several
pups and I was able to put him on the floor a few times when only one or
two pups were near us and he did great. I think he only snapped twice.
HUGE improvement over last time. The treats and kisses were free flowing
:)
Buster- mom took up all my talking space.

I should say Harley II since there really is only one Ms. Harley Esquirrel.
She's a sweetheart and just like all the other critters that pass through
here, I'd keep her if I could. She's got the lap warmer thing down
perfectly!
