Dobey
Tue, 19 Jan 1999 22:56:58 EST - from Jeanese
This rescue just came up in Portland, OR. I am the closest to him so I will
coordinate. Does anyone know of a potential home? I already have three dogs
and a cat, so I can't foster him for long.
Jeanese
<<Hi Jeanese!
Sex: Male/neutered this summer
Temperament: Doberman Temp., very protective w/owner & his territory
(WATCHDOG), but w/my husband, myself & 13 yr. old....he's been great!! Plays
fetch and loves to be chased when he has a toy or stick. Does not like to be
picked-up.....if we want to hold him, we sit down and then call him up to our
lap (and once he's in your lap you may then carry him if necessary).
Good w/Kids & other pets? We don't have any other pets, but doesn't seem to
be a problem (we've had him w/our parent's schnauzer & a lab....but is
protective with his house & food). We've never had kids (other than our son)
around Dobey. He has been to the kennel a number of times and we've had no
complaints (it takes him a just a little bit of time to realize that he's
safe, but has never bit any kennel help).
We do have a crate, collar, and his blanket which we would send with him. We
also occasionally have to put on a barking collar (when he sees a
stranger...he will continue to bark and jump until he knows they're gone...the
watchdog in him). We've always kept him fenced (large area though cause he
loves to run and a LARGE dog house with blankets & fan in summer & heat lamp
in winter.....the dog house is available & would encourage it if at all
possible to transport).
Dobey has been a good pet for us and I have especially liked him because my
husband travels a lot and he is quite the watchdog!! I think once someone
adopted him and Dobey got to know them then things will be all right (at least
that is what I'm praying for). We've also had him trained (obedience school)
and the trainer even told us that as long as he's on his terrain/property,
that he would be very protective of it and his owner(s)!
Jeanese, I sure hope you can rescue Dobey. I feel bad as it is having to give
him up! Please feel free to ask any other questions. Anxious to hear back
from you! Thank You So Much! ~Evelyn in Portland~>>

Many of you don't remember this but IMPS recently had a rescue in Oregon. He
was an owner give up (they were moving and couldn't take him...whatever....),
anyway, I went and picked him up today and took him to his new home. I drove
last night from my home south of Seattle, WA to Portland, OR (where I spent
the night), then picked him up and took him to the John Day Dam in OR where I
met his new owners...about a 300 mile trip one way. Anyway, his owners
dropped him off at a kennel to board him for Friday night, they gave him the
shot that he needed (Bordatella-sp?), clipped his nails and got him a
bath...and I don't know what else...except for their bill said $177.00, then
he was all ready for me to pick him up this morning. He seemed to be a pretty
good dog, with the exception of not wanting to be picked up (you have to call
him to your lap and then pick him up, or he will nip you). His new owner is
Becky that was on the waiting list. She may be joining the list soon as well.
Anyway, it's been a busy weekend, tomorrow I go back home...some people I know
think I am crazy for driving 600 miles to rescue a minpin, but what was I
suppose to do let him be PTS. Anyway...another rescue and hopefully happy
home for a deserving dog.

Dobey the dog that Jeanese delivered last weekend didn't work out in that
home. The people didn't know much about Min Pins as I wrote last week and
he had lived out doors most of his life so he was alittle more difficult
about obeying rules indoors than your average male Min Pin.
The new owners arranged for him to be brought back to Jeanese who can't
foster him because of his tendency to nip and her young son so IMPS made
the decision to fly him to Wendy for evaluation and training before trying
to place him again...I'm sure she will keep us informed on his progress.
Jeanese was wonderful and raised most of the money for his fare from list
members, who deserve our thanks and also from the family that gave him up.
Here is Jeanese's report today.
<<Update on Dobey:
He got his health certificate to fly today...all healthy. Although he is on
the verge of being overweight.
He is an affectionate dog, in fact as I type this he is try to get me to pet
him, he will definitely bite and nip when someone tries to pick him up or do
something to him he doesn't like.
I am planning on putting him on the plane on Monday morning, the flight that
Wendy told me about, leaving Seattle at 7:37AM. Flight #1478 leaving Seattle
at 7:37AM arriving Dallas at 1.22PM. Flight #2041 leaving Dallas at 2.10PM
arriving El Paso 2.59PM. The cost $124.00.
I have already received a donation from his previous owners: $50.00 (made out
to IMPS, so I will be sending it to Susane-just kidding about the spelling), I
am supposed to get one from Dorothy Cox for $50.00 and Brenda Worman for
$25.00. So that covers the cost of the flight. The only thing not reimbursed
is the health certificate at $30.00. I will be sending the $50.00 to Susan
tomorrow or Monday, the other checks should be made out directly to me so I
can take care of them, so IMPS will only need to replace the $50.00 I will be
sending them.
Anyway that is all I know for now.

"Doby" arrived here in sunny El Paso at about 3:00Pm today. He is a very
large, about 14" Black & Rust boy who is more than a tad overweight. He is
officially on a diet.LOL He has natural ears than stand erect and considering
his lack of pedigree is not a bad looking boy at all. He is absolutely NOT
agressive, he let me take his food out several times, of course he thinks I am
some sort of weirdo for doing this but I needed to find out if he was
agressive. After he ate the 1/8th of a cup of food I got an "Oliver Twist"
look, like Please Sir, I need more Sir!!!!!!!!!!!LOL I have been exercising
him in a covered exercise pen and all the girls go over to talk to him which
he likes a lot. When he comes out of his crate he will jump into my arms and
snuggle so I think all this boy is going to need is some socialization with
some training guidelines. If he has been kept as an outside dog he really has
no idea how to behave in the house. I hope I can accomplish this fairly
quickly and we can find him a permanent home of his own. I will get pictures
of him tomorrow and send to anyone that would like to see him.I will send one
to Mag for our Website. We should all thank Jeanese for rescuing him and
sending him to me. This is a very healthy boy who just needs a little help to
get him on the right track.

<<Hi Wendy,
We're still doing great with Coby (Doby). He's trying to learn how to
type right now!!! Did you know he loves to lick hand soap so the
bathroom doors are closed for right now. Something to work on! He
doesn't like Idaho's cold wind. I don't blame him on that.
Thanks Wendy for sending him to us. And thanks for taking him in to
give the guidance he needed. He has a permanent home with us!!!

<<Hi Wendy,
We made it through the first 24 hours. Yippee! Coby(Doby) slept good
all night except he wanted to get up at 7:00 am. Way too early!! He
slept in his crate in the bedroom with us and the crew. We had a
rough moment after coming in from feeding the horses this morning and
I did just what you said to do. Get the leash. Then we did a "time
out" in the crate. He inhaled his cookie and piece of jerky this
morning. You would think he was starving!!!! I keep reminding myself
to treat him like a puppy as in being socialized to everything like
it's brand new to him. We're getting along great doing it that way.
He is even wagging his tail when I talk to him. I like that!!!

If you have any queries, feel free to email me at

Any takers?
Just read your last e-mail (and, yes I did get the other one). Here is the
info you wanted regarding Dobey. It really makes us sad :( that we have to
do this, but we are moving back to Texas and will not be able to keep him
there with us. I'm so excited to know that you can help me. If you could
meet me in Portland sometime (anytime, before Feb. 14th) that would be
awesome!!!! I hope this will all work out! And, we do have the AKC paper &
certificate for him too.
Age: 6/2/93
Color: Black & Tan (great markings)
Wt.: around 19 lbs. (ALL MUSCLE - Quit a jumper!!!)
Ht.: About a foot tall
Vaccinations are up to date; will need Bordetella next month (I have all vet
records)
House Trained? He has been an outside dog for us, except during bad weather
and thunder storms (we came from TX...where they get bad & he ABSOLUTELY is
terrified of thunder & lightning so needs to be indoors with some loving')
when we have had him inside we've kept him in the utility room w/his blanket
and he does fine (6-7 hours).

weighs 19 1/2lbs. Of course that is going to change, pretty quick LOL The one
picture I got just as he was about to help himself to Pizza, caught him in the
nick of time.He needs lots of socialization but is coming along well and I
hope he can find a really great home soon.

My other VERY good news is that I have also found a SUPER home for Doby and
he is going on Tuesday morning to Boise,Idaho to a really lovely family. They
live out in the country with horses and have 3 other rescued Minpins. Now he
has lost some weight and undergone some training he is a joy to have around.
Since he was only ever kept out in the yard and only brought into a Utility
Room when the weather was bad he had no idea how to be a family dog!! Now he
does and will undoubtedly turn into a Couch Potato!!!!! He is even beginning
to interact with the other dogs although he isn't really sure about how to
play with them yet! He just sits and cocks his head on one side and asks me
just what they think they are doing??!LOL The one thing that he is super at is
being a watchdog!!!!! When he is on his side of the fence he is a tiger!! but
I found that when I let anyone inside the yard he is perfectly friendly if I
tell him Its OK! in other words a normal MinPin
