More Pics of CeeCee and Harley

Fri, 22 Apr 2005 10:42:39 -0500 - from Janice

Hi Mag, I have some more pictures for the website.
And thank you for allowing me to show off my babies for everyone to see!

Harley snoozing in his favorite position:

Harley

The next one is him reacting to being awakened by having his picture taken (pretty much GO AWAY...):

Harley

CeeCee the morning she decided to eat her breakfast with her butt in the air (the woodstove is just out of sight to the right, and it was cold that morning):

Cee Cee

It tickled me so much, she ate her entire breakfast like this (and yes, I put down a little placemat for her when she's eating):

Cee Cee

Thank you, Mag!

Our rescued min pin, Scooter

Sat, 28 May 2005 14:42:28 -0600 - from Kenneth

Hello

My wife, Wilma, is a certified dog groomer with 14 years of experience. She was grooming at a local Veterinary Hospital in Craig, Colorado when a Min Pin was brought in after having been struck by a car. The owners had let "Rooster" out into an unfenced yard and he ran into the street. He had a severely fractured skull (the Vet. said that his head felt like scrunching potato chips) and a lot of road rash. He had no internal injuries (other than his brain) and had no fractured bones (other than his skull). The kennel cage he was put in was in the area where my wife was grooming. He was conscious but would convulse every few minutes, thrashing about in the kennel, further injuring himself. My wife asked the Vet. about sedating him to prevent further injury and was told that the owners had decided to have him put down. We found out later that the owners Father had just passed away and she was caring for 3 small children, one of which was a new-born. All of this happening just 3 days before Christmas. The thought of trying to nurse the dog back to health, with all of the other problems she was having, was just too much for her. My wife watched the dog thrash about for a couple more hours. When he would stop convulsing, he would sit up and look out the kennel at her. Those big, brown eyes had the desired effect. She asked the Vet. if she could take the dog home with her so as to at least give him a chance. At the time he said absolutely not, as he had been instructed by the owners to euthanize him. To go against their wishes would be a "breach of professional ethics". Some time later, the Vet. came to euthanize the dog. He had the needle and everything. But the dog looked at him and the big, brown eyes worked again. The Vet. made the comment to my wife that "this dog wants to live, go ahead and take him home". She called me at home and told me the story and without hesitation I agreed that we would give him a chance at life. We both knew that he may not have lived and if he did, it may not have been a "normal" dogs life, considering the head injury, but we knew he would die if we didn't at least try. The Vet. sent a sedative and an antibiotic home with my wife and the recuperation process began. He was very thin. He weighed only 8 pounds. You could see rib and hip bones through the skin. He was severely dehydrated. His skin was not pliable and would stay bunched up when you pulled it. His tongue and right upper lip were swollen and the area was starting to become infected. He had taken a hard blow to his head in the area of his right temple, just behind the eye. He could neither eat nor drink on his own. We knew we had to re-hydrate him as soon as possible. We got a syringe and filled it with water. We put the tip of the syringe to his lips and squeezed out a few drops of water. At first he hesitated to take any water from the syringe, but before long he figured it out and drank several CC's. We were careful to not give him too much right away for fear of vomiting and choking. I would hold an ice cube next to his mouth and he would lick it until it was gone. We mixed up some canned Science Diet, grape seed extract, Proanthezone and Amoxicillin and fed him the mixture with another syringe. He was eager to eat. (To this day he growls whenever we show him a syringe!) We got a cardboard box and padded it with towels and a comforter. He continued to have seizures about every 20 minutes and we would attempt to keep him still when they came. We were reluctant to use the sedative because of the head injury. We were hopeful that the seizures would stop on their own. My wife and I would take turns watching him, around the clock, 24 hours a day, for the first 6 days that we had him. By the second day the seizures were coming more often. He was now having 6 to 10 seizures every hour. It became apparent that to avoid further head injury during the seizures, that we would have to start sedating him. It worked. The seizures came much less frequently and he was able to sleep. On Christmas day, he had his first bowel movement. It was a great relief to us because it meant that he most likely did not have any intestinal obstructions. His skin was becoming more pliable and his eyes were brighter. Towards the end of January the seizures had stopped and he was able to stand up for brief moments before falling down. He kept pulling to the right and his head wobbled. It was apparent that he had some paralysis on his right side. The right side of his tongue was curled up and wrinkled. The left side was normal looking. When he would attempt to stand his left legs worked better than the right. By now he was able to eat and drink on his own if we put the bowls close enough. By mid February, he was able to stand and walk a few steps before falling over, always onto his right side. If he could walk far enough to lean against a wall or piece of furniture, he could stand for a longer time. He still appeared to be dizzy when he was on all fours. By the end of February he was able to remain standing and could walk until he ran into or stumbled over something. But now he could get right back up and try again. As the weather warmed into spring, we would take him for walks on our property. He was now practically running ahead of us and we started using a retracto-leash to keep him under control. And he had found his voice again. He had not barked since we got him and wondered if he was able to. The name Rooster did not seem appropriate to us and we started calling him Scooter.

We have now had Scooter for 17 months. As it turns out, we are his third owners. My wife and I were curious about any memory loss Scooter may have suffered. His first owner turned out to be a co-worker of mine named Carol. Last winter we arranged a visit with her. As we approached her driveway, Scooter became very excited. He recognized the property. When Carol walked toward our vehicle, he went crazy trying to get out to see her. He remembered her. We visited for a long time and told Carol the same story I have related here. We cried a little, but we laughed a lot. Carol was extremely grateful for having saved his life. Scooter's second owner came to the Vet. Hospital one day and asked my wife about him. She indicated that she would like to see him again and that was okay with my wife and I, but she never did. Scooter still walks with a sidle but Carol tells us that's the way he walked when she had him. In fact, Carol can tell no difference in him since the accident. He is a 100% "normal" Min Pin. Twice I have seen him have minor seizures after having sneezed, but they don't seem to bother him.

The Vet. was right. This dog wanted to live. He was meant to live, and my wife and I were meant to have him, we are sure about that. He is now a very special member of our family. He has brought life into our home. He is such a character, he keeps us laughing all the time. He was meant to be with us, also.

We would like to have another Min Pin but the timing is not right as we have 2 other dogs and a cat. When the time is right we will get another Pinscher so Mr. McScoots will a playmate. We will attempt to find a rescue dog at that time.

Thank-you for what you and your organization are doing. My wife and I had never had or been around Min Pins before Scooty came into our lives. They are truly precious. We now realize how much joy they can bring into a persons life. Especially when given a second chance.

Sincerely, Kenneth

Here's my Enzo

Mon, 27 Jun 2005 16:13:25 EDT - from Lori

Hi Mag,

I very much enjoy reading all your rescue stories.... we would like to add a new little minpin to our family some day soon but for now we have Enzo (as in Ferarri), my daughter got him from a gang member looking fellow at Venice Beach in L.A. she was visiting there and said.... OH WHAT A CUTE DOG and he said...you want him? so she comes home with this PUPPY that looks like a miniature doberman... I had NEVER seen one before.... needless to say.... a year later and we are IN LOVE! all of our friends know Enzo as "our grandson!"
..... a month ago we almost lost him.... we live near Del Mar California and there is a quite popular Dog Beach there. My daughter had been taking him there quite a bit and he was LOVING the water and LOVING the big doggies.... I guess he got overheated and overexcited and crashed into a dog a full speed... he immediately went into seizures and blood pouring from his ears. She called me and screamed... I THINK ENZO BROKE HIS NECK!!! I said.... PLEASE have him put to sleep and DO NOT let him suffer! all the people on the beach were screaming and crying and everyone was afraid to touch him....a very calm bearded man (who she said looked like Jesus) walked up out of nowhere gently picked him up and said, "he'll be ok"... she then rushed him to the Emergency Vet (All Creatures were GREAT), they took xrays and said nothing was broken but his head was VERY swollen and the eardrum ruptured. they had him on IV and LOTS of drugs for 48 hours. 2 weeks later (and 1000 dollars) he was as good as new! They said they NEVER saw a dog in such bad condition come back so fast and strong. He's a determined little guy!
We kept thinking about the man on the beach and we would have like to find him to thank him.... well 2 weeks later... my daughter's friends were in a coffee shop MILES from there and there he was!!! they went up to him and said YOU SAVED OUR PUPPY! he gave them a hug and told them he couldn't stop thinking obout our little Enzo.
Thank you SO MUCH for the opportunity to share our story and our LOVE OF OUR LIFE!
~Lori, San Diego
Here are some pics of our little Bumper Boat, Bumps, Bumpers, Bum-bum, Enzy.

Here he is when he was a puppy with Cookie, she's 15 and he keeps her young... she's lost weight because Enzo INSISTS that she plays with him!

Tobie

Thu, 14 Jul 2005 13:09:08 -0500 - from Sara

Tobie

I adopted a stray min pin a few months ago. A black and tan. We named him Tobie. Tobie had a lot of health problems due to neglect. He also acted like he had been abused. He had a very bad case of heartworms. We did everything we could for him. We took him to A&M for emergency heart surgery (Where they go into the artery and actually remove the worms.

All of the worms were adult and had been there a long time. After the surgery he went downhill. So we had to put him down. (At A&M). I fell in love with Tobie. Both my husband and I did. And all the staff at A&M vet hospital did as well. He touched our hearts.

Here is the only picture we have of Tobie. Tobie made me a better person. He encouraged me. He saved me as much as I saved him.

Thanks,

Sara

My precious min pin Koka

Tue, 19 Jul 2005 14:14:31 -0500 - from Jennifer

Koka

Koka is almost two years old, weighs 5lb, but is a bundle of dynamite! She is the most lovable (and loved) dog that we have ever had. She means the world to me, my husband, and all of our family. Koka is our daughter and a very loved granddoggy. She gives her sissy (a Siberian Husky named Akira) sweet kisses and Akira gives them right back. The ritual she has is every night before we go to sleep she has to give my husband kisses all over his face until she decides he has had enough, crawls under the covers and nods off to her little dream world. Without her our life would be so much less.

Min pin rescue, Sugar

Wed, 20 Jul 2005 09:42:36 -0700 (Pacific Daylight Time) - from Tracy

Sugar

Hi I live in Port Hardy B.C. and I have rescued a min pin myself. I had heard about her being abused and talk to the owner, who had said she could not afford to feed her and was making her live outside because she would pee and poop all over the house, She had a broken leg at the time due to the man either kicking her or stepping on her. When I told her that I wanted to take her she wouldn't let her go because of her son. But when I offered money that changed everything we paid $400 for her and I would have paid more she is so sweet and guess what she doesn't pee and poop in the house I think she was nervous we also have a dog door. We love her to death her name is Sugar. She will be four this Sept.

My min pin adoption story

Sun, 25 Sep 2005 18:20:03 -0400 - from Lana

Hi my name is Lana from Coleman, Alberta, Canada. I check in on your site frequently following the success stories and possible adoptions near me, I have a min pin adoption story of my own that I would like to share with all of you.

It was in March of this year (2005), when we stopped in at a Petland store in Medicine Hat, Alberta to purchase some pet products, when I noticed this adorable red dog racing around the store. I crouched down and he stopped, I called,"here puppy",and he came racing and jumped in my lap, it was a min pin!, I was in love instantly. The employee walked up to us and told me he was up for adoption through a local adoption society called S.O.S, my jaw dropped. My husband heard me say "what" from the other side of the building. "Scooby" and I had instantly bonded he was coming home with me, he didn't even want me to put him back down and would growl at the employee when she came by us. She told me he had a hard 9 mths so far as he was purchased by an oil rig employee who was gone all the time and kept him locked in a crate, with someone bringing food and water. The owner finally gave him to a cat lady, that didn't work out, and from there, to SOS and foster families and Petland. This poor dog had known no stability and love in his 9 mths of life. I filled out the adoption forms and awaited the approval the next morning. They called and said the dog was definitely mine as I had wonderful vet and personal references and that everything checked out, YEAH! So, After my sons hockey game we go to pick him up and they tell us there's bad news. The dog has gone missing. Apparently they let "Scooby",who was a runner, run around the store, on the day I was to pick him up, and it was the busiest day that week, and he got out the doors between customers. I went to look for him right away but to no avail, as this had happened 5 hours earlier. So now to shorten this story, he ran down the trans canada highway avoiding being hit and was picked up by some young fellows and taken 9 hours across the border to another province. Two weeks later, still I don't have my Scooby back and I'm sick I call constantly wondering what they are doing in Medicine Hat. Posters were put up back in Medicine Hat and it was out on the radio as well as the newspaper and SOS staff were out looking frequently. I'm at work one day and get a call from the adoption president, they found my SCOOBY they think! A friend of a friend was talking on MSN and said he knew where the Medicine Hat dog was, the other person then contacted the president and the ball began rolling. Scooby is microchipped too which made all the difference as the President's husband is a RCMP officer and they talked them into taking the dog into a vet clinic and giving him over. After a day or two of talks, they did, he was scanned, it was him for sure. It took 5 days for me to have Scooby home after all that, he was thin, scared, had a sore leg and hair was falling out all over. BUT HE WAS HOME WITH ME! He's since recovered 100% and we can even go outside unleashed. We have come a long way, him and I, it was meant to be. A rescued Jack Russell has now joined our family as well and Scooby has a bud.

Thanks for listening,

Lana

Story of the Kitchen on Near death

Fri, 25 Nov 2005 12:45:32 -0800 (PST) - from Weslie

My min pins name is TigerLilly and I have a story of terror for you. Over Thanksgiving Holiday, she decided she was alittle congested and needed to take a claritin-D. She was in the kitchen and my mom had dropped the pill, she eats it before the second bounce. I was so scared because my family has had another dog die from eating a Blood Pressure pill. So I decided the best thing is to make TigerLilly vomit it up. I tried and she would not give in, we called the 1-800 # and They said she would be ok, she would be vomiting and dia. but nothing too bad. That night she was acting so nervous, I was scared she would not sleep or sit still. The next day I took her to the vet. He said she would be ok, but I gad to leave her. I cried on my way out, I was afraid I would loose her. Thankfully he was right she is alittle more jumpy than normal, but she is ok. I thought that this would be a good story to tell people so they can keep their dogs out of the kitchen. Thanks

Roxy and Capone

Roxy and Capone

These are pics of Roxy and Capone all ready to go outside in the cold and just loungin in front of the fire, their favorite place to be!

Roxy, Capone

I had a similar instance to the dog who go Claritan-D. My dogs somehow got into my fiance's bag and got her synthroid for her underactive thyroid. We believe that they ate about 5-10 each. Of course I was freaking out and called the vet. They told me they did not know and that I should call poison control, which freaked me out more. Poison control assured me that the dogs would be alright, except that they would be hyper for the day. OMG, hyper was an understatement! As we all know Min Pins have a lot of energy so start with, no try doubling that. These dogs would not sit still, we had to take them to the doggie park to burn off some energy. They ran non-stop for two hours befoe we went home. Even then they were bouncing off the walls and did not sleep all night. It is kind of a funny story looking back on it, but it was definitely the scariest instance I have even had with my little guys.

Mr Trouble T

I've enjoyed looking at your pages and the wonderful min pins.

We recently lost our puppy. He crossed over the rainbow bridge on December 6th - one month ago today. Losing him has been so very hard because he was so young. He would have been 2 at the end of December.

His name was Mr. Trouble T. and he was the most delightful puppy I've every experienced. He loved everyone and he loved life... and he thought I was a genius. haha
Attached is his picture. I send it along to share with everyone in precious memory of the most memorable puppy of my life.

Thanks so much

Story: The other day my finance and I were watching a sad movie and as usual she was crying like a baby. Capone noticed this, and because he is so compassionate, jumps up on top of her like the pic of him giving me a hug and proceeds to give her a bunch of wet kisses to make her feel better. It was amazing to me because he could tell that something was wrong and he took the initiative to make it better. It was adorable to the point that it almost made me cry to see him do this.
