A little brother for Kahn

Thu, 6 Mar 2008 13:19:39 -0500 - from Cindy

Sargeant and Kahn

We adopted Sargeant (the red boy) from our local humane society this week... yesterday in fact. He's 16 weeks old and 5lbs, he was surrendered by his owners as they had a big dog who did not like him. Kahn is almost 4 years old and they already act like true siblings, playing, fighting etc etc.

We are pretty excited about this new member of our family and can't wait to introduce him to the family! It's a boy!

Karen's Gang

Sat, 8 Mar 2008 05:14:05 -0800 (PST) - from Karen

Karen's gang - 5 of 7

Hi Mag,

I wanted to share some pictures of our gang. Buster and Rusty were our first boys (Buster is from SC and Rusty from GA). Then came Rocky and Handyman (We drove to Houston, TX to pick these two up), then Jesse and Leona(originally from NJ, but moved to SC because their owners were military. They were having another baby and couldn't keep them). Oscar found his way to our door on 12/11/2007. Harvey is our son's great dane(he's 3 now). Last but not least is Pinky, she is a stray that came to us in the winter of 2006. She had frostbite on her ears, nose, paws and tail. As you can see she lost part of her ears. The vet said she was lucky to be alive. For the first couple of months we had her all she did was eat and sleep. With antibiotics and love, she is doing great!

Eddie and friends

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 10:34:48 -0400 (EDT) - from Lee

Eddie

I have owned two (2) minpins to date. The first was 16 years ago when I purchased Max, my first minpin. I bought him from a breeder who told me that he was oversized and could not be shown. I told her that was fine and only wanted him for a companion, since I lived alone. He was a wonderful dog, very smart, and very loyal. He lived a good long life and helped me through some tough times but was always there to comfort me. He passed away about a year ago. I was very saddened that I lost a very loyal companion. Over the course of years I have saved many dogs from a life of misery either by their owner's giving them up or not able to care for them anymore. I have four other dogs. Currently I own a White German Shepard, a Miniature American Eskimo, a Jack Russell Terrier, a Rat Terrier, and now another Minpin! His owner passed away and his mother did not want to take care of any pets. So that is how I acquired another Minpin. His name is Eddie, and he is just like Max! He loves our home with all the other dogs to play with. Eddie is very energetic, playful, loves to sit with me and gives me hugs. I am sure he will enjoy is new life with us........

Kipper

Just found your website...I went to Poughkeepsie, NY for my brother in law's wedding and ended up with a Min-Pin that adopted me at the pet store in the Poughkeepsie Mall. I went in looking with my neices and this little guy got to me... he had been at the pet store over 2 months!!! I couldn't leave him... so... we bought him and named him Poughkeepsie... Kipper for short.

He was born in March of 2008... it took me 3 weeks to get this sweater on him... I know i am going to enjoy reading someone else's min=pin stories... boy... we didn't know what we were getting into... Kipper is a scream...as you can tell from the attached photo, he is full of personality.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas...God Bless

Allergy Info - Jake

Sun, 4 Jan 2009 13:14:05 -0600 - from Tracy

Hi there,

I used to receive your emails about 6-7 years ago. I was interested, at that time, in adopting another minpin (I have a 9 year old minpin with severe allergies), as well as any information on treating allergies. I received countless emails from the kind people on the list with ideas on how to treat my little Jakie's allergies. Nothing seemed to work for us, and our vet advised us against some of the ideas. Now, I thought I'd hook on to see if you were interested in sharing what worked for us, with the rest of the group.

Jake

Our dog Jake, suffered for 7 years with an e-collar and a fleece coat to prevent him from scratching and chewing himself to bits. He wore this non-stop. Sometimes, when we'd get home from work, there would be blood on the carpet and he would have somehow gotten his coat off, or reached between the neck line of the coat and collar and scratched himself raw.

JakeThe second photo is very graphic. If you wish to see it, click on the picture (the file will be opened in a new browser window). It was very hard to see him this way, and very difficult and maddening for him as well. We tried allergy shots, cortisone, benedryl, steroids, creams, vet recommended diets (unlimited), and various different allergy pills recommended from the university of vet. teaching hospital. We have never tried to estimate the amount of money we've spent trying to get him comfortable...nor do we want to. He is our baby, and when we asked the vet if it was in-humane to keep him this way, he always recommended us to keep trying. Well, on a whim, in 2006, one of the vet techs called and asked us if we would be interested in a drug study for dog allergies. We were willing to try just about anything, because by this point we have had 7 years of sleepless nights (his constant chewing, licking, scratching, kept us up all night, every night...in addition to our our twins having been born in 2004). Within the first dose (although, we were told it usually doesn't happen that quickly) we saw a difference. After a week, he was much less itchy. We started getting full nights of sleep, and his fur started to grow back (prior to this medication he had NO fur...skin infections and flair-ups had made it fall out, and stay out).

Jake

After 2 years on this amazing medication, "ATOPICA", he no longer has to wear a coat, e-collar, or boots. He has a full coat of fur now, and seems to be a totally different dog. His allergies kicked in 2 days after we brought him home from a pet store (a mistake we will never make again!) in 1999. I do not have any kind of degree to recommend anyone else trying this medication, but I wanted to get the info out there for anyone else who's treasured family member has the same difficulty. Maybe this may prompt them to talk to their vet about it. The meds are not cheap, but they are worth every penny if they work...at least to us.

I just wanted to make sure that I was able to give some advise to those that are searching for help, as we were, 6-7 years ago. Life if not perfect for little Jake, as he now suffers from cataracts in both of his eyes, and somehow got a broken bone in his foot while getting his nails trimmed at the vet office almost 5 weeks ago, but his foot is on the mends in a cast, and he knows our house well enough to get around, but even so, our life has changed dramatically. And we are all thankful for that...especially Jake!

Thank you again for everyone's help that was there to give me support and suggestions so long ago. I hope this letter some how gives hope and/or help to someone that may be in the same situation as we were.

Sincerely,
Tracy & "Little Man Jake"

Requiem for Roxy

Mon, 2 Feb 2009 22:59:29 +0000 (UTC) - from Bonnie & Ed

...I've Been Aware of the Time Going By,
They Say in the End it's the Wink of an Eye...
                        "The Pretender" by Jackson Browne

Roxy

How can you say farewell to a dear and loving friend without feeling pain? The simple and unfortunate answer is that you can't, so cherish your time together as much as you can. For us, that dreaded moment we so long feared finally arrived. Our tiny Roxy has left us. After fourteen years, age and illness finally overcame this brave, tough little lady of a MinPin. Though Roxy is now gone, what she gave to us is not; a legacy of devotion, loyalty and more love than you could possibly imagine. She forced her way into our hearts, spending many a year there, and when she left, though unintended, she most certainly broke those hearts. So now we suffer from a deep sense of loss and emptiness, for what we held so dearly will forever be missing. But that painful feeling will eventually disappear, and until then, we can console ourselves with memories of all the joy, laughter and happiness Roxy so unselfishly showered upon us. We take comfort in knowing that we gave her a good life, full of love and adventure, and that she gave us one in return. If anyone ever asks us what heaven should be like, we would say at a minimum to be able once again to hug Roxy and take her for long walks in the warm, bright sunshine.

Maddie, our rescue

Thu, 16 Apr 2009 22:07:06 -0500 - from Sylvia

Maddie

Last August, (2008), we were ask if we would be willing to take a minpin in our home, at least until a permanent home could be found for her. A member of our church knew I loved animals and this little dog had taken up residence on their front porch for over two weeks. I checked with local vets, newspapers, shelters, police etc., but no one had inquired about their missing pet and she didn't have a chip. At that point, I decided she was ours, along with the fleas and the "unknown". She has turned out to be a wonderful new addition and has been accepted, eventually, by Phoebe the cat, and Rembrandt, the cockatiel. She loves taking showers, sleeping in the sun and watching for the squirrels, but food is her passion, probably because she is afraid she will be without, (but she won't). She gets so excited when my grandson is home from college; she is with him the whole time he is around. I probably should not have sent so many pics, but each were defining moments in her willingness to make this her home, and we are so glad we have her.

Boomer

Boomer

I have got to tell you that I just found this page and have loved reading the stories! I have one of my own to add about Min Pin's.

I have a baby boy (well he's 3 now, lol) named "Boomer". Boomer came to us in a very unusual way and I don't even have room to explain it, just unusual. I was not looking for a dog let alone a Min Pin because every min pin I had known seemed to have a really bad disposition and I would not have gone out looking for one. But let me tell you something. I have had this little guy (who is actually not that little, he is at least 22 lbs.) since he was 7 weeks old, and I can't imagine my life without him.

I have never had a dog that makes me so happy in my entire 40 years of life and I have never had a dog with such a great personality. I swear this dog understands every single word I say and talks to me and my husband all the time!! (He has us well trained..lol) He has slept in bed with us since day one that he came home with my husband and is total little lover boy wanting to be with us all of the time and on our laps constantly. I have never, ever, had a dog that was so smart and loveable in my life! He has me hooked from now on and when we adopt again, we will definately be looking for another red min pin.

Here are some pictures of my guy and we are so proud of him! We do laugh however because he is nothing like what the book says they should be, there is not a brave bone in his poor little body! lol!! But he is perfect!!

Thanks!!

Daisey

Daisey

I adopted a dog about 4 to 5 years ago.Her name was daisey. She was the sweetest kindest dog ever.I live here in washington and she was given to us because she was rescued from the side of the highway.I still remember the phonevcall i got from my moms friend about daisey. We had been looking for a family oriented dog and well daisey was just perfect the day we met her.when we first brought her home she would go flying off the top if our couch and she was the fastest dog i had ever seen. we were soo scared she was going to hurt herself.but it was soon to find out that it was very normal of dogs to be that way.Days turn to weeks and weeks turned to months with this dog.Which soon turned to years. She was the sweetest dog ever. She used to jump and pull the branches off our tree in the backyard it was the cutest thing ever.I still remember taking her for walks all the time and her snuggleing real close to me under the blankets.she was the strongest dog i knew she just thought she was sooo tough she tryed to fight the bigger dogs. She was very protective over my family and whenever there was fighting in the household she would bark to try to get everyone to stop. She always comforted someone when they were crying trying to make sure that they were alright. Then there were soo many times where she would get out the front door and just run and run cause she thought it was a game. She was the sweest dog. My favorite part of her was when i would bring my boyfriends home and i knewvwhen she did not like them. She would growl like no other at them and it would turn out they were complete jerks. Then there were the ones she absolutely fell in love with and they turned out to be amzeing.she was an over all great dog.But on July 27. 2009 she got out of our house like a normal day we got a treat and tryed to lowert her back to the house. That was when she ran into the street and was hit by a car and killed instantly.I cryed my eyes out and i have for a few days now because i remember all the great things about her.Its hard comeing home and not seeing her standing right in front of the door and jumping on me.Or when i would leave for school her sitting in my window.I miss her alot. But i know that she lived a great life and was an absolutely amazeing dog.I have to say out of all the pets i have ever had she was the most friendly and my best friend.I miss her alot.I haveto say Minpins are the overall bet pets u could have.Thank You for letting her live her life with us.

Hi there!!

I have just recently come across your website and I thought that I would send a couple of pictures of our sweet littel boy Milo. Milo is about 1 1/2 years old and he came to our home as a rescue as well. He was with someone who just could not care for him the way that he needed andwe immediately decided as a family that he needed to be here with us.

Milo means the world to us and I couldn't imagine not having him here. He has been an absolute awesome addition to our family.

Thanks for the great work that you do...

Killer Killer

Please take to time to view the attached pics of my 1 year old Killer. I adopted him from the local shelter and he is a ham for the camera. If I take a picture of anything but him he runs into the shot. He loves to dress up as well. That means either pictures or bye bye.

The picture of him in the raincoat was taken by a local paper photographer and picked up by IP. It has made papers all the way to Japan.

Thanks,

For the Love of Min Pins

Fri, 5 Feb 2010 13:37:29 +0000 (UTC) - from Bonnie and Ed

Our Last Day with Roxy
"Our Last Day with Roxy"

February 2, 2010, was a very difficult day for us, for it was the one year anniversary of when we had to say a final farewell to our little Roxy. Her memorial, "Requiem for Roxy", was posted here on the front page (though it has now been moved to the archives). Shortly thereafter, we saw other memorials; Bella's from Tracy & Dave and Spike's from Melissa and Maddie Mae, and we knew your pain and sorrow fully well.

Driving home from the vets without Roxy that cold winter's morning, we swore that we would never get another dog, not wanting ever again to feel the terrible hurt we were feeling then. But that changed, we mellowed, for we both realized there was now a big hole in our lives, a great sense of emptiness, and we came to fully appreciate just how much our little Roxy was an integral part of our existence. Friends and family never just said Bonnie and Ed, it was always Bonnie, Ed and Roxy. So we decided to get another dog, a min pin of course, is there any other kind? Then Bonnie said: "If we get one, we might as well get two", so we did!

Evey,Rosy
"Evey and Rosy Taking Over"

We brought them home in May, Evey and Rosy, two sisters from the same litter in Southern Illinois. They haven't disappointed us, being full of fun, adventure, feistiness and love. And yes, they were some work (people told us we were crazy getting two at the same time), but nothing that is good in life comes without some work, and there is plus side to having two; they play with each other, sleep together soundly at night, and don't suffer the separation anxiety when we go to work or elsewhere. Most importantly, we must emphasize that Evey and Rosy are not replacements for Roxy, nor do we feel that we are being disloyal to her, nothing will ever replace Roxy in our hearts and minds, never, ever! Rather, our new little girls are welcome extensions of the quality of life given us by Roxy, we only have Evey and Rosy because of her, Roxy paved the way.

So we say to others who have loved and lost, don't shun the opportunity to bring another of these wonderful little min pins into your lives. Love doesn't come in a one gallon can. No matter how much you gave before, you can give much, much more, and will be rewarded for it. So don't be afraid to jump in the water again, if you haven't done so already, open your hearts and give one (or more) of these little joys a place in your home, your heart and your life, we are so very happy that we did.

Xena and Killer

I wanted to share our good fortune with every one. We were looking for a friend for 1/2 min pin 1/2 rat terrier, Killer and found him a red min pin we named Xena. She is the same age as Killer and we got her from a kill shelter. It was the first day we went to look and the first day she was there.

The first pic shows them looking out the window together, the second I caught them "holding paws", and the last Xena has her arm around Killer.

We are so fortunate to have gotten a wonderful min pin and they love each other so much!
