Hi Mag,
I am writing b/c every now and again I look around the IMPS website to see if there are any local Min Pins that need a good home. The last couple of months I have noticed a growing number that have special needs and was compelled to write about our experience. I think a lot of people shy away from dogs with any special needs and so I am hopeful our story will help change the mindset of others.
I adopted a red female, Annie, in Sept '07 from IMPS Pa/NJ and worked with Jessica N. Annie was a special needs dog and we were able to get her off all her meds (3 different pills) in a matter of months by ensuring her diet was full of all natural dog food and nutritional treats. She was found on the streets of Trenton, NJ, had mange and was skin and bones when we got her. Annie enjoys her crate (it's her safe haven) and has to sleep there at night b/c she has an overactive bladder, but aside from that she has been a great addition to our family. She is still the only one in the pack that can be walked off the leash and will not run. Annie use to be very timid, on the defense, and afraid of everything, but over time she became a very loving, affectionate girl and embraces any opportunity to give hugs. The vet she started with while in Jessica's care had a muzzle note in her file b/c she bit a couple of employees and today, no muzzle is needed! It was also recommended by IMPS that Annie be the only dog w/no kids in the house and I am happy to report we had Wesley first, followed by Annie and then Joey and she loves her brothers as well as the kids in the family. The moral of our story is don't shy away from a Min Pin with behavior problems and/or medical problems b/c they need us more than words can describe and you can teach an old dogs new tricks with lots of love and attention!
We have three min pins all together; Wesley adopted via PetFinder and Joey who we consider our "oops" and rescued him from a mall pet store that me and my family don't care for b/c we believe some, or possibly, all of the dogs come from puppy mills. We live in a well known area for puppy mills, Lancaster County, PA. If I had the time and money I would have a shelter of my own :-)
Thanks for your time and all that you do for the breed!
Patti
Left to Right- Wesley Kayden rescued, PetFinder 12/06 – Joey Dakota – AKC – but in our opinion rescued from Mall Pet Store that should be shut down - our lovely lady Annie Louise rescued, IMPS 09/07
