IMPS - New rescue

Fri, 05 Feb 1999 20:56:28 -0500 - from Dawn

Hey guys - Just thought I'd tell you that I have a new rescue as a guest. He is a 3 yrs old red boy and his name is Whicho (whee-choo). He's extremely tiny! 6 1/2 pounds!!!!!!! He's a little timid, but very sweet....He should be able to place very easily! Any takers?? LOL Well, I'm going to go amuse Skootchie and Whicho...Millie is passed out at the moment and probably won't recover until Sunday....she goes to doggie daycare a couple of times a week and it knocks her socks off! Best money I've ever spent! I'll send you more info on him when I have it, he's only been here a couple of hours!

Mon, 08 Feb 1999 23:36:02 -0500 - from Dawn

Hello all - Now that I've had the weekend to spend with this darling little boy, let me tell you all about him! From the beginning....He's a 3 yr. old red boy that was turned into a shelter. All the shelter had on his background was that he was kept in a crate in the cellar with 2 other dogs. I know he's had NO socializing whatsoever. I don't think he was abused, but I did come to the conclusion tonight that he does NOT like men at all! He is the absolute sweetest boy I've ever met and I have to tell you that 1) He's changed the way I think about males (only have females) and 2) he's REALLY going to test me as far as letting him go! I've never considered keeping a rescue before and I'm still trying to hold firm to that, but my nails are being pulled down the chalkboard and into his sweetness! The reality of what 3 dogs mean to a single person is the only thing keeping me sane! That and the fact that I really planned on a show dog as my next addition. Ah well, back to the little heart breaker! I took him every where I went today, which included Walgreens (twice - Mag, got those holiday pics you wanted!), the bank, PetCo, Barnes and Noble, and Store 24. He did very well, smelling all the females we met without nipping. I didn't let any males near him as he didn't do well with my brother, my father, the tax guy (Yeah! I'm getting money back!), my es, the guy I am formatting a book for, or his nephews. He actually snapped at my brother and the guy with the book. But, that was after I told them both he wasn't friendly and not to go near him, so it was their own fault as far as I'm concerned. They shouldn't have reached down and tried to pet him. Other than that, he's great! He loves to cuddle and will go under your shirt if you let him. I constantly have to move him from behind my back when sitting on the couch because I'm afraid I'll squish him! He gets along pretty well with Skootchie, but not as well with Millie. I'm thinking that the other two dogs he was in the basement with were bigger than him and probably terrorized him night and day. but, we're working on that, his growls aren't as fierce as they were on Fri. or Sat. He's not exactly housebroken, saving his poops for when we come in and I'm conveniently in another room. I'm going to start leashing him to me so I know what's going on when! I'm also going to take him to work with me at PetCo so he can be with more people. Bribes (BilJac Liver Treats) work very well, so as long as everyone I work with is armed, I think we'll do OK. If it does get too much for him, I can always kennel him in the office. Whoever did his ears, tail and dew claws was either not experienced, or very drunk. I think he still has the dew claw joints or whatever they are and his tail is at least 4 links long. His ears I can't even begin to describe. Well, now that I've written a book, I think I'll stop!

Thu, 18 Feb 1999 15:28:32 -0500 - from Linda Tellez

Hi Everyone!

I don't come on here very often, though I read and enjoy your posts every single day. I'm Linda Tellez in San Antonio, Texas, proud property of a beautiful MinPin girl named Sara.

Well, here goes the Important Announcement (drum roll please!).

I have the wonderful task of letting all of you know that I will be Whicho's new mom. Gods, I'm on pins-and-needles just thinking of it! My co-workers are convinced that I'm having an extramarital affair because I've been walking around grinning like a madwoman all afternoon!

It'll be a bit before I have him in my arms though --- Dawn wants to keep him for a bit longer to build his newly-budding confidence a little more before his plane trip down here to Texas. (Personally, I think she just wants to get in a few more hugs and kisses before letting him go!)

I know all about Whicho's past and how this misuse has affected him (poor Dawn, I've been grilling her for days now for every tiniest bit of information!). But Dawn's love and kindness has been getting him off to great new start in life, and I can't wait to do my part by giving him a loving home in which he can truly blossom! My love for this tiny little terror is shared wholeheartedly by my hubby, Danny, and our 14-year old son, Michael. Sara doesn't know about her new baby brother yet , but I'm sure after only a few days she'll love him just as much as if they'd been born littermates.

Well, I guess that about covers it. I'm gonna go hide in the bathroom and jump up and down for joy a few more times now < LOL!>.

Take care, Everyone, and Blessed Be!

Linda and sweet Sara (who says, "I do so know! I have ears, don't I?!")

Oh my GOODNESS!!! By this time tomorrow, my sweet little Whichoo will be at the airport preparing for his flight home. I hope Dawn remembers to tell him that pilots don't appreciate technical advice from the passengers, and that flight attendants don't carry BilJac liver treats in their pockets. Although they really should.

I'm about to pop with excitement!

Wish us luck and fair weather!

Blessed Be,
Linda and sweet Sara (who knows "something" is up with Mom)

Hey Linda! I'm just as excited! Whichoo is here in work with me today so we can go and get his health certificate right after work! I can wish us all the luck in the world, and like always, we'll dodge those bullets! ;0)
However, the fair weather is another story! We are getting 8-14 inches today and tonight, so keep praying it stops! So far, all of the flights are still leaving Logan, and they are keeping up with what's falling so all of the runways are still open! Let's pray to them all that this stays the case!!!
Dawn and Whichoo (Who says Mom! You won't believe what Aunty Dawn does all day! Her work is so easy I could do it!)

Fri, 26 Feb 1999 12:52:20 -0500 - from Linda Tellez

Well, Everyone, I'm signing off for the day at just 3 1/2 hours till Whichoo time! I'm going to the grocery store to buy something really delictible for supper so Whichoo's first night will be filled with the wonderful and welcoming aroma of roasting meat. Then I plan on snuggling with Sara for a bit before I head to the airport.

I don't have a computer at home, so I've asked Dawn to let you know how his homecoming goes.

Blessed Be,
Linda and darlin' Sara

Whichoo is home!

Fri, 26 Feb 1999 19:08:04 -0500 - from Dawn

Hello all - I'm talking to Linda now, Whichoo is home and is doing EXTREMELY well! He is running around right now sniffing everything. Sarah is very excited and they have even started playing together! He has let Linda pet him, pick him up, give him kisses, everything! This is the same dog that growled at me and my dogs the first time I brought him home for 2 1/2 hours, so I am very, very proud of his advancement!! He has *christened* his new home a couple of times in the typical Min Pin "I'm the boss here" fashion :0)

Linda now thinks that I'm a complete liar as I've told her all that he's done and all that he was capable of! I told her he barks when someone comes to the door, and he didn't. I told her not to expect to pick him up the first night, and he let her. I told her he might growl or snap at her son, Michael, or her husband, Danny, and he hasn't. Sheesh! I be he said in his mind something like "Oh yeah, you want to put me on a plane, I'll show you!" So, he is acting like the perfect little angel and making me look like a crazy lady!

Oh well, at least I have the comfort of knowing that I did some good with the little guy! All that socialization wasn't for naught! I have to tell you all, I am just so proud of his progress!!!!! Whichoo is a such a good boy, he deserved nothing but love and tender care for the rest of his life and now he's going to get it! Considering his background, he is just amazing! OK, I'm starting to babble like the proud goddess mama that I am so it's time to call it quits! <G> More Whichoo pics coming soon!

Between you and I, I don't think this smile is going to fade at all tonight!

And THAT ladies and gents, is what rescue is all about! :0)

Whichoo's doing GREAT!
Click here for previous posts on Whichoo.

Mon, 01 Mar 1999 12:17:01 -0500 - from Linda

Hi Everyone! I don't have too much time, but I wanted to let you all know how little Whichoo is doing in his new home. Since his arrival Friday afternoon, he has become my Siamese Twin. We're officially attached at the hip by an invisible leash (leastways, that's what Danny - my hubby - says). He's my little kissyface-snugglebug. He has allowed Michael, my 14-year old, to pet him and he even relaxed and "got into it" for awhile. So long as Michael doesn't startle him by bounding down the stairs in typical teenage fashion and making himself sound like a herd of stampeding buffalo, Whichoo is fine with him. Cautious, but fine.

The issue with Danny is taking more time, which crushes the poor man terribly. Whichoo allows Danny to pet him so long as I'm sitting with them to protect Whichoo from harm. Last night we were all on the couch together and I needed to go to the kitchen to get something. The petting session was going quite well, so Danny softly told me to go on, that they'd be fine. Well, they weren't too fine. The minute Whichoo felt my body shifting away from his, he snapped at Danny and did a super-canine leap back onto my now vertical lap, did a cat-twist to land feet first, and then beat me to the kitchen. Like I said, Danny's feelings are really suffering a blow, but he does understand Whichoo's perspective and is willing to take as much time as needed to win the little guy over.

On the other hand, Sara and Whichoo are doing *really* well. I've caught them in several wild games of chase, and just this morning they were playing ball together. Sara has started showing some jealousy since she's noticed that Whichoo is attached at my hip, but as we know, that's something they'll simply have to work out for themselves (and yes, she is getting just as much if not more attention to compensate for Whichoo's presence). The fact that they're having such a great time playing bodes quite well for their future friendship.

Let's see, on the "marking" issue --- I haven't caught Whichoo deliberately marking (read that "peeing") on anything inside since that first 24-hour period. So I think the worst of that is officially over.

Oh, and the best news? Whichoo finally slept with us last night, *all* night. Friday and Saturday nights, he would settle down and go to sleep in bed so long as it was just me and Sara with him --- the minute Danny came to bed, Whichoo would go elsewhere. Well, last night the little guy came to my side of the bed looking very worried (since Danny was already in bed), then he snuck up on the bed by my head, and promptly burrowed under the covers. He ended up down at the foot of the bed, still under the covers, and contentedly slept the whole night between my stinkers and Danny's. Sara, as usual, was pressed up against my hip and thigh.

Well, that's Whichoo's first weekend in a nutshell! He's doing sooooo very well and adjusting beautifully, and I have Dawn to thank for her great job in helping him realize that life really is a cool thing.

I'll continue to keep you guys updated on Whichoo's progress in his new life.

Blessed Be,
Linda, sweet Sara and winsome Whichoo

Mon, 01 Mar 1999 15:37:01 -0500 - from Linda

I forgot to tell you guys this morning, but Whichoo's new love in life is his new Mom's homemade liver brownies. He's decided dogs need not live by kibble alone.

PS - I won't tell him there's carrots in the mix if you won't (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Take care! I'm heading home to my little terrors in just another 30 minutes!

Bright Blessings,
Linda, Whichoo and Sara (who knows about the darned carrots, but graciously overlooks it because the liver, beef and garlic taste so yummy!)

Mon, 1 Mar 1999 16:15:29 -0600 - from Linda

**How do you make them?**

-----------------
Sara and Whichoo give this one their nubbin-waggin lip-lickin seal of approval.

Mom's Homemade Liver Brownies

It's very very simple since I don't measure anything. I buy a container of sliced beef liver and cut it all into small pieces. To that I add a slightly lesser amount of lean stew beef, which is purchased already cut up into small pieces. I dump it all in a food processor and grind it all up, then dump the meat mixture out into a big mixing bowl. Then I put into the food processor an amount equal to the stew beef of grated fresh carrots with some crushed garlic, two or three raw eggs and a little canola oil and grind all that together; then dump all that in the mixing bowl with the meat. I "thicken" it with grated parmesan cheese and dried parsley flakes. I grease a retangular glass cassarole dish with lard (or crisco, whatever!) and bake in a 350 degree oven until it's brown and bubbly, and a knife stuck down in the middle comes out clean. Let it cool, then slice it into MinPin sized brownies. I baggy several small batches and freeze them, and keep only one baggy at a time in the fridge for treat time.

This is a huge favorite in our house --- except with the two-leggers who complain about the whole place stinking like liver. Well, that and the fact that I'll bake for the babies and not for them .

Try it and let me know what your babies think!

Blessed Be,
Linda, sweet Sara and winsome Whichoo

And it was a very important lesson. A life changing experience. He will never ... ever ... be the same again. And what was that lesson?

Never ... and I do mean NEVER ... jump on top of the toilet until you check that the lid is down.

I don't think I need to go into details here, do I? LOL!

Whichoo Update
Click here for previous posts on Whichoo.

Wed, 28 Apr 1999 11:59:13 -0500 - from Linda

Hi Everyone!

I realized I was waaaaay overdue with an update on Whichoo, the little red boy rescued by Dawn in MA, and whose presence has been blessing my family since the last weekend in February.

In a nutshell, Whichoo is doing beautifully! Sara, our black-and-rust female MinPin, has accepted him as her brother; they spend their time playing almost constantly. When they're not playing, they're vying quite shamelessly for Mom's attention.

Physically, Whichoo is doing well too. When he came down here, his little teeth were stained and pretty rotten looking; now they gleam pearly white from all the raw marrow bones he enjoys. Also, when he came down here his eyes were irritated and runny, leaving stiff black "tear-tracks" staining his little face. Well, apparently whatever he was allergic to up north isn't native to Texas, because the allergy cleared up and his little face is now unmarred by those ugly stains. Also, after a couple of months on good human-grade food (Nature's Recipe for toy breeds) with fresh fruits and veggies to snack on, his coat is as silky-smooth and shiny as Sara's. He's just soooo beautiful!

We're still working on building his confidence and courage around strangers, and especially around strange men. Because of the abuse he suffered in his "past life," this will be the toughest thing to overcome, far worse than tartar-crudded teeth and runny eyes. For instance, my hubby and I realized just this morning that he must have also been beaten with a man's belt or something similar; we'll work on that next. As for his prior beatings with a broom, Whichoo has overcome that and then some - now it's the broom that gets abused, because everytime we leave it out, Whichoo goes out of his way to pee on it while the gleam of a vengeance satisfied lights his eyes.

And happily, after nearly two months of being a Tellez, Whichoo has accepted the fact that his new Dad is pretty OK. As of a couple of days ago, they became official "snuggle buddies." Naturally he still prefers snuggling with Mom - but hey, that simply means the boy has good taste LOL!

I wish you could all see how happy he is! His little eyes are just so bright and eager, and his new-found joy in life is something he strives to demonstrate every single day. Happiness literally radiates from him! I don't know how better to describe it - I think it's something you'd almost have to see to believe. And speaking of which - Yes Dawn, I'm developing another roll of film today, and you'll have a package in the mail tomorrow I PROMISE! Then once a few of Whichoo's pics are posted, all of you will be able to see for yourselves the pure joy lighting his eyes.

Well, this is quite long enough. Sorry I was so wordy, but I had a lot of wonderful things to tell you. I promise not to go so long again before the next update.

Blessed Be,
Linda, sweet Sara and winsome Whichoo

Thu, 29 Apr 1999 09:06:22 -0500 - from Linda

Hi Everyone!

Well, when I said I'd be giving you all Whichoo updates more often, I didn't imagine I'd be doing it the very next day - but this was just tooooo funny not to share :-)

Whichoo is truly a Texas dawg. He was born and bred to live in San Antonio - it's just that no one knew the extent of his Fate until last night when he demonstrated his true Texican nature for the first time.

I had made refried beans and guacamole; and prepared the accutraments to make some basic but very yummy tacos and chalupas - now all ya'll Yankees don't know what you're missing if right now you're picturing Taco Bell food - I'm talking the REAL Tex-Mex thing here.

Now, after every meal and while I'm loading the dishwasher, I let Sara and Whichoo assist me by pre-treating all bowls and plates, etc., that don't have onions or chocolate or anything harmful - they lick 'em clean and then I put the things in the dishwasher. Their aid is invaluable.

Last night I transfered the leftover guacamole into a smaller bowl and gave the larger one to the babies to lick. Now it was a lightweight plasic bowl, about a 3 cup size, with a curved lip around the edge to allow the lid to seal tightly.

Things are going great, the babies are doing their job - but after about 2 or 3 licks Whichoo suddenly realized that guacamole was the very best darned thing he'd ever in his life tasted - truly the food of the gods! Without warning he wrapped his little teeth and lips around the curved edge of the bowl and took off like a streak of red lightning!

Sara was stunned. Words could not convey her heartbreak at losing the sacred avacado goo. With her big brown eyes expressing her total lack of comprehension in her brother's actions, she trotted around the corner to see just what the heck he was up to. She just didn't know quite what to think as no one had every made off with her "licks" before.

She and I found Whichoo on the couch just licking for all he was worth. He saw us coming and started licking even faster. His little tongue was a blur of pink. As Sara watched stunned and I watched laughing, he picked up the bowl and turned his tail to us - and continued licking frantically, trying to get it all in his belly before either of us could react.

And when he finished? Those bright little MinPin eyes were just soooo pleased and soooo happy.

Yes, Whichoo was Fated to be a Texan. Only REAL Texicans appreciate a good bowl of guacamole that way! LOL LOL LOL :-)

Take care, Everyone! And Bright Blessings!

Whichoo's Newest Passion
Click here for previous posts on Whichoo.

Wed, 12 May 1999 09:33:40 -0400 - from Linda

Hi Everyone!

Whichoo has just discovered his newest passion in life. Maybe not as wonderfully delicious as the guacamole which he stole and ran away with before LOL! , but *almost* as incredible. And what is this most luscious of foods?

Banana pudding. Yummmmmmmm ........

I told my hubby as we watched Sara cooly begging and Whichoo performing bright-eyed gymnastics to get more of this wonderful banana delicasy, that it's so sweet and so pitiful all at once. Sara has never wanted for anything since coming into our lives at the ripe old age of 12 weeks (and she'll be 6 years old on June 3rd) - she accepts delicasies and gourmet treats as a regular and expected part of her life. But Whichoo, bless his little puppy-pie soul, is still so thrilled by how wonderful his life has become that each new treat he learns about is a wonderful life-altering epiphany. It's such a joy to see him suddenly discover something which he finds incredible. His joy knows no bounds! Yet then the knowledge comes to me and my hubby that he's so very thrilled because he was so very deprived before. So for us, each wonderful epiphany for Whichoo is for us, tinged by a faintly bittersweet shadow. And of COURSE we're gonna keep those treats coming VBG.

So we've decided that, even though Whichoo's birthday won't be until next January, we'll be serving guacamole and banana pudding on that day. Of course, the menu may change as more and better epiphany's occur! LOL!

Brightest Blessings, Everyone!
